Adlington Cenotaph

Adlington War memorial

The Adlington War Memorial stands as a poignant tribute to the local men and women who gave their lives in service during times of conflict. Situated in a prominent location within the town, the memorial offers a place of reflection, remembrance, and community gathering, particularly during annual commemorations such as Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day. The monument honours those who served in the First and Second World Wars, as well as later conflicts, with names inscribed as a lasting record of their sacrifice.

Unveiled in the aftermath of the First World War, the memorial was funded by public subscription, reflecting the collective desire of the Adlington community to pay tribute to the fallen. Its dignified design—featuring a stone cross and inscribed plaques—conveys a sense of solemn respect, while the surrounding space is carefully maintained as a peaceful setting for contemplation.

Over the years, the War Memorial has become a central symbol of Adlington’s shared history and resilience. It serves not only as a reminder of the past but also as a focal point for present and future generations to reflect on the costs of war and the value of peace. The Town Council, alongside local organisations and residents, remains committed to preserving the memorial and ensuring its continued relevance.

Whether visited during official services or in quiet moments throughout the year, the Adlington War Memorial stands as a dignified and enduring testament to the courage and sacrifice of those who served their country.
